2026 Betway Summer Cup – first log

Johannesburg, South Africa — There are a total of 42 entries for the Gr1 Betway Summer Cup to be run at TAB Turffontein on 28 November 2026. With the final field limited to 20 runners, a tense few weeks lie ahead to see which will make the final cut and face the starter to vie for their share of the R6-million stake cheque.

A panel, comprising 4Racing’s Gabriel Soma, in consultation with NHA Handicapper Lennon Maharaj and Kurt Felix from Race Coast, will publish two logs leading up to the premier Highveld race – one on 13 October and the second on 5 November.

The Betway Summer Cup log functions as the official ranking tool used to determine which horses are most likely to be selected for the Betway Summer Cup, based on their position at the time of publication.

Log rankings are based on a combination of factors, including but not limited to:

• Merit rating
• Recent race form
• Form over the distance
• Performance in key build up races
• Form in Graded races

In compiling the first log, preference was given to Grade 1 winners, followed by Grade 2 winners and horses with higher merit ratings.

It is important to note that horses that do not participate in relevant feature races leading into the Betway Summer Cup may drop in the log standings. Therefore participation in these lead-up races is strongly encouraged and will be an important consideration for the second log.

However, the final field will be determined at the discretion of the panel.

The log serves as a strategic guide for owners and trainers, providing a clear indication of where their horse stands in relation to the competition.
